Treasures of sacred art
Moselle is brimming with religious heritage, mirroring its popular piety and on occasion painful history. Bildstocks or roadside crosses are peppered across this area's landscape. The rich villages around Metz fortified their churches for protection. Don't miss Saint-Martin de Sillégny church and the magnificent frescoes in Sixtine de la Seille.
Stained-glass window art blossomed in Metz during the Renaissance, in large churches such as Saint-Etienne Cathedral as much as in village churches such as Saint-Martin in Zetting - and stretched to modern days in the Chapelle des Cordeliers in Sarrebourg, where you can admire one of Chagall's masterpieces.
Moselle has also established a longstanding reputation for its organ production - and has indeed been dubbed a "terre des orgues". No fewer than 600 of them have been identified in Moselle, and a French-German summer festival puts this extraordinary heritage in the limelight.
